Highest point in construction of biomass power plant

February 22, 2007

The highest point in the construction of the new biomass power plant for Twence in Hengelo was reached on 20 February, when builder Standardkessel GmbH of Duisburg raised the final component of the chimney into place with a crane. Obstruction lights were immediately installed on the 80-metre chimney in connection with the aviation approach routes in the surrounding area.

The chimney has a double wall: the outside is flanged, while on the inside, the chimney components of were welded together by workers who were lowered down into the chimney in a hoist carriage. That was clearly not a job for anyone who has a fear of heights or suffers from claustrophobia!

The construction of the biomass power plant is expected to be completed this summer. Following a period of trial runs, this plant will be operational in late 2007.
