Composting

Twence converts both organic waste from companies and households and landscape refuse into high-quality compost.

Compost is not the same as manure. Rather, it is a valuable product that can actually improve the quality of the soil’s structure. Compost regulates the permeability of the soil: it makes clay soil lighter and sandy soil more solid, allowing more air and water into the ground. Moreover, compost activates “life” in the soil, contains nutrients and stores them for plants to use. About one-third of all compost is used for the agrarian sector. The rest ends up being used in the landscaping sector: for public gardens and sport fields, in private gardens and at garden centres.

Organic waste

Vegetable matter from your garden and kitchen is organic and thus biodegradable. The organic-waste processing plant has a capacity of 75,000 tonnes per year and consists of 20 composting tunnels as well as a hall for further composting.

The high-quality compost from Twence can even be mixed in with potting soil for nurseries and garden centres as a replacement for peat. This saves the scarce peatlands, sparing both the natural sources and the landscape. It also prevents the formation of large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is released when peat is cut.

Landscape refuse

We also process “green waste” or landscape refuse such as prunings, grass and tree trunks as compost. This kind of waste is first shredded and then composted in the open air. The “green” composting facility has a capacity of 25,000 tonnes per year.
