The Wood Bank at Twence makes waste wood—including waste from manufacturing and wood processing as well as (re-) construction and demolition debris—suitable for reuse.
Wooden materials are sorted into categories according to their quality, which is what determines whether or not the material can be used again. A-quality wood (unpainted and untreated wood) goes to the chipboard (particleboard) industry. B-quality wood (painted and treated) is shipped off for use as secondary fuel in German electricity plants. Wood of this quality will also be used as fuel in our own biomass power plant, which is expected to go into operation toward the end of 2007. C-quality wood (e.g. railway sleepers and other wood that has been impregnated or treated with creosote) is processed according to the current regulations, which could mean that it will be dumped at Twence.
