Solar power from the green heart of Overijssel

The Twence solar park produces solar energy which can be purchased by power supplier Qurrent. Twence is the largest green energy producer in the Province of Overijssel. In addition to the renewable energy sources, steam and heat, Twence also produces solar energy. We are convinced that energy from renewable resources is the energy of the future. That is why we have built now a solar park that can power 400 households, but by 2020 we want to produce solar energy for 10,000 households.

The Twence solar park produces solar energy which can be purchased by power supplier Qurrent. Twence is the largest green energy producer in the Province of Overijssel. In addition to the renewable energy sources, steam and heat, Twence also produces solar energy. We are convinced that energy from renewable resources is the energy of the future. That is why we have built now a solar park that can power 400 households, but by 2020 we want to produce solar energy for 10,000 households.

Electricity chooses the path of least resistance, so for inhabitants of Twente there is a great likelihood that the solar energy from Twence will be delivered to their homes.

Qurrent
The 100% green electricity is produced by Twence and supplied by Qurrent. Qurrent is an energy cooperative which supplies only green energy and contributes to ideas on how to save power. Furthermore, Qurrent does not seek maximum profits and the green energy is delivered at cost price: that makes a difference. Part of your monthly payment also goes towards the maintenance and further development of the solar park.

First solar park in Twente built
Twence has built the Tienbunderweg four-hectare solar park inside the fences of our own site on the border between Enschede and Hengelo.
The Province issued the integrated environmental permit for this new activity in March 2016. We were informed at the end of June that the Renewable Energy Production Incentive Scheme (SDE+) subsidy applied for had been granted for the first phase of the solar park. The call for tenders for the construction of the solar park was then started. The contract was awarded to SolarCentury from Helmond, a company which builds solar parks all around the world.
Over a period of two months, 4,720 panels with a total capacity of 1.3 MW were installed.
The panels measure approximately 1.65 x 1 metre and are placed facing the south, with two panels on top of each other and several panels in rows next to each other. The highest point of the panels is around 2.4 metres above ground level, while the lowest point is 1.20 metres. This allows the site to be maintained through natural grazing, for example by sheep.

‘t Rikkerink Solar Park

Twence wants to develop a solar park on top of the former landfill site ’t Rikkerink. A sealing layer will be applied on top of ’t Rikkerink during 2018-2020. This way, we want to ensure that the groundwater contamination located beneath the landfill will no longer be fed by rainwater contaminated by waste. As a result, the contamination will eventually disappear. The covering layer will be applied such that it will be easy to install solar panels on top of it.

Work on developing the plans for constructing a solar park was started in 2017. The solar park will cover the larger part of the landfill's 16-hectare top surface area. The slopes of the landfill are forested and will stay that way: the sealing structure and the approximately 40,000 solar panels will be hidden from view by the forested slopes. This way, they will be nicely integrated into the landscape. The park is expected to supply green electricity for around 4,000 households.

Sealing Layer
There is a contaminated groundwater basin beneath the old landfill site. It is fed by rainwater that trickles through the landfill. The water – contaminated mainly with salts – is removed from this groundwater basin via ditches and brooks. The contamination entails no risks for humans or animals, but it is advisable for it to disappear over the long term. Sealing the top of the landfill site with a permanent concrete-like covering layer makes this clean-up possible. Twence is using secondary construction materials for the covering layer; they are made from recycled materials. The construction of the sealing layer commenced in 2018 and will take 3 years.

When Twence was established, the joint municipalities in Twente transferred the management of the former landfill site ‘t Rikkerink to Twence.

More solar power for the Twente region

We want to expand our renewable energy production with more solar parks. Currently we are investigating the possibilities and feasibility for two other sites that are suitable for the development of solar farms.

The first location which qualifies for development as a solar park is situated at Boeldershoek–West along the A35, on the edge of the municipality of Enschede. This site has an area of around 34 football fields, providing enough space for the production of solar energy for approximately 4,500 households.

The second location is the former landfill site ’t Rikkerink. This site will be sealed with a top cover in the coming years, making it suitable for the installation of solar panels.

If everything goes according to plan, the parks (including solar park Tienbunderweg) will jointly generate electricity for almost 10,000 households in 2020.
